Gabriel Richard Invitational, Oct. 16, 1999

Highlights

After an excellent performance at the Portage Invitational last week, this week's race was a bit of a disappointment. Pioneer's varsity placed 7th of 17 teams, as opposed to 5th of 24 teams at Portage. It was a harder course and it was warmer. A typical time was about 30 seconds slower than the previous week.

For the 5th consecutive meet, the top finisher was Matt Johnson. Matt ran 17:02 for 11th place. Andy Harvey and Mike Kelly-Sell turned in very strong performances. Both ran within a few seconds of their PR's, a notable accomplishment considering the more difficult conditions.

Two runners turned in top performances for the junior varsity team. First, Pat Cullip was the only runner to set a PR, reducing his time by 29 seconds. Pat has now improved his time by over 3 1/2 minutes this season. Second, freshman Andy Schaich was finally able to shake off injures and run a race. He ran a respectable 21:15, a solid first effort. Way to go, Pat and Andy.
