2011 Alumni Race / Time Trials

Alumni Race / Time Trials - Fri. Sep. 2

The day dawned with rumbling thunder, but it stayed dry and turned out warm, humid and hazy for the Pioneer Men's Cross Country Team and Alumni Time Trial this morning.   There was a sizable turn-out of runners from prior years.  It was fantastic to see so many friends from Don Sleeman's coaching tenure show up on the home course.  Some came in memory of Pete Chethik, who passed away this year.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and congratulations to those who ran in his memory.

Don McLoughlin was today's race winner, and this is not the first time he's come in ahead of the varsity men. Don ran out front at the start, then broadened his lead throughout the race.  At the end, Don finished his 5000 meters in 16:30.  Way to go, Don!  It's is fantastic to see your high school training bear so well into adulthood.  Keep it up.  Chris Berggren came in at 19:13. Alex Dombroski ran it in 22:41, Greg Geider 23:36, and Leigh Chethik finished in 26:28.

The Pioneer team looks promising this year, with two seniors leading the guys: Co-Captains Mark Flamme and Stephen Doll. Mark was on the team last year, but struggled with injuries, so he was not able to compete.  It was great to see him able to run today!  Mark ran really well, finishing tenth for the Pioneers.  Stephen has a stress fracture in his foot, curtailing his running for at least the first half of the season. We wish you a fast recovery, Stephen. Thanks to both of you for setting a good example for the younger teammates.

The team is strengthened by eight Juniors who are dedicated runners and experienced racers: Galen Burrell, Max Shpilband, Boris Burman, Dean Brigham, Nick Aukerman, Dan Fonte, Rob Frakes and Zach Fogel and Tyler Leach.

Five sophomores ran today with zip, talent and focus:  Eddie Codrington, Costa Willets, Jacob Norton, Maro Roh and James Oh.

Twelve freshmen came out to compete, looking strong for the the Class of 2015.  Lucas Arrivo was top man for his class, finishing tenth overall and ninth of the Pioneers. Jacob Johnson was the next freshman over the line, just edging out Will Jibson, who sprinted hard at the finish. Tristan Edwards, Adam Mannheim, Nick Liu, William Yang, Dario Potter, David Kellam, Jackson Hall, Jerry Chen, and Stone Mathers all seem to be taking to the sport of distance running very nicely.

Returning Varsity runners Eddie, Galen, Max, Boris, Costa, and Dean ran well, trading the lead within their pack and switching off a bit to draft each other.  The final kick took Eddie flying across the line. He was followed by Galen and Max, battling each other.  Galen edged out Max and they landed just a second apart.  Boris, Costa and Dean dug deep to finish fast and looked determined to keep getting better.  It was great to see the teamwork here!  Keep it up guys, and GO PIONEER!

And the winner is......
Pioneers-second, third, fourth fifth, sixth (20 points)
Alumni – first, eleventh, twenty-second, twenty-fifth, and thirty-first. (90 points).
