42 teams competed in the Men's D1 Varsity race.
Varsity
Highlights The day was warm and dry, the sun shining
and the leaves on the trees displaying beautiful fall colors as the Pioneer Men’s Cross Country Team competed at Portage
West Middle School in Portage today. Unfortunately, the unseasonably warm weather led to some frightening circumstances,
as the stand-by ambulances were pressed into service for several athletes, including our own James Oh. James collapsed
just short of finishing his 5K race and was treated for heat stroke. Fortunately, James is fine and will be back competing
soon. There cannot be enough emphasis on good hydration when the weather is hot!
The Pioneer Varsity finished
in 19th place with 533 points. Pinckney came in first, Saline second and Grand Blanc third, with 125, 138, and 141 points,
respectively.
The rabbit vehicle sent up clouds of dust, proving that the warm sunny weather made things exceptionally
dry, the grass sparse and the dirt flying. The Varsity men competed first, and all felt the heat. However, there
were some fantastic performances out there today. Captain David Torres led his team’s seven with a strong, steady
pace. David finished in the top 50, seizing the 35th spot overall, and received a medal in the awards ceremony.
Congratulations on your 16:52 finish, David! Eddie Codrington held his position as second varsity runner with a 77th
place finish in 17:23. Galen Burrell finished as the third Pioneer today, and came in 137th in 17:57. Tyler Leach was
fourth over the line, in 140th place in 17:58. Max Shpilman had a super run today, coming as Pioneer’s important fifth
man and scoring for his team, Max ran the 5K in 18:00 right behind Tyler, in 145th position. Costa Willets and
Boris Burman ran in 18:05 and 18:30, respectively. Dean Brigham elected to run JV today, as he has been struggling with
a virus this week. Stephen Doll was out with an infected heel.

JV Highlights The JV men ran 2 hours later than varsity, and
if possible, the heat felt even more intense for the runners. The guys went out strong, and many exciting performances
were seen on the dusty course today. Philipp was really pushing through the pain, and at one point, slowed to a walk,
stumbled, then collected himself. He managed to pick himself up and finish the race with a strong run through the finish.
Philipp was covered with dust, as all the guys were, reporting that teeth and tongues were completely coated, but still there
were reasons to smile:
