2009 Alumni Race / Time Trials

Alumni Race / Time Trials - Sat. Aug. 30

Gathering under overcast skies, the Pioneer men’s cross country team invited alumni runners to compete in the official season opener Time Trials.  When the athletes crossed the finish line, Coach Sleeman had greeted old friends and had a good indication of the current team’s capabilities.  By the end of the race, the sun was shining.

Seven alumni runners came out to challenge thirty-three athletes on the Pioneer team, .  The winner today was Don McLaughlin, who has won in past years.  Second was last year’s top senior, Dan Culbertson, who finished right up with the lead pack.  Pioneers Nick and Adam Kern had a strong run, finishing 3rd & 4th respectively.  Nathan Karr, who had been leading early on, came in 5th, a fine run but not to his liking.  Alumnus-guest runner Scott Westover came in sixth place,   then Andy Sanz-Guerrero of the Pioneer varsity finished seventh.  The battle for eighth and ninth place was hard-fought by both David Wallington (alum) and Joe Frakes, David edging out Joe right at the finish line.

There were some exciting finishes, with athletes demonstrating their strong conditioning; many rising early all summer to hone their running skills for the Fall.

Eighteen Seniors competed this morning– they appear to be running very well.  After the top 5 mentioned above, there are some competitive contenders for varsity spots, notably Kevin Chaperon, Lucas Arias, Niko Rombes, Brad Baker, Ethan Warren, Jon Diep, Jack McWhinnie, John Fonte(welcome back from that pesky foot injury!),  Michael Sullivant, Ryan Goodwin, Aaron Trierweiler (good to have you back from the injured-list), Saunders Hayes (welcome to the grass, coming off the river), and Ben Aukerman.

Junior Sebastian Ag finished in the top ten, welcome to the US, Sebastian.  Sebastian hails from the north of Norway.  Noah Kaczor continues to improve, close on his heels are fellow 11th graders Colin Egerer and Eric Seitz.

Another exchange student, Felix Schmid from Germany, is welcomed to the team.

Sophomores were represented by Kevin Knight and Alon Samuel, both putting forth a good effort at the course today.

It’s great to see the Freshmen out.  Eight of the boys competed today and ran well.  Tyler Leach led the pack, followed by Dean Brigham, Rob Frakes, Boris Burman, Josh Sherick, Nicolas Foster, Zach Fogel, and Nick Aukerman.

Coaches and parents alike are looking forward to a successful season at the Pioneer Men’s Cross Country races.
