Varsity Highlights
The long grass was wet for the warm-up run, but dry in time for the Pioneer men’s cross country team to compete
at Kensington Metro Park in the Brother Rice Invitational 5k. The Pioneers were edged out by Catholic Central with a
slim six point difference. Troy’s Mike Atchoo had a dazzling finish, winning the race with a time of 16:03.
The men’s varsity team described a good start, although not a particularly fast
start. They described the course as a pretty tough three miles, and the front-runners ran in some tight clusters for
the latter part of the race. Nathan Karr finished fourth in a time of 16:20, Nick Kern just behind him in fifth place
with 16:22, Adam Kern ran 16:35, finishing eighth. What can we say about Nathan, Nick and Adam – they are so strong
and so consistent, we just know they will run fast and do well, and they did. Congratulations, guys! Andy Sanz-Guerrero
gave an exciting finish, passing three runners in the last 200m. Andy’s time was 17:08, capturing thirteenth place.
Sebastian Ag, a newcomer to cross country running, ran a surprising 17:30, finishing twenty-second. Sebastian is a handball
player at home in Norway, so he brings a strong fitness level with him to the States. Joe Frakes finished in twenty-fourth
in a time of 17:33, and Kevin Chaperon finished fifty-fifth in 18:15, perhaps struggling with nerves joining the varsity ranks.
These guys show a lot of promise, and Coach Sleeman will be encouraging teamwork in upcoming practices. Click here for MLive report on the 2009 Brother Rice Invitational.

JV Highlights It was a beautiful, sunny day with comfortable temperatures and very light winds. Many families came
out to see the guys race, and the men’s junior varsity team gave lots to appreciate this morning. Running in a
very large group, over 200 boys kicked off the race with the Pioneers forging to the front right away. The front runners
from Pioneer stayed together well, supporting each other nicely. Muhammad Sani took an early lead and kept it throughout
the race, winning in an exciting time of 17:20. This was commendable, considering he is fasting for Ramadan…congratulations,
Muhammad!! Lucas Arias had a great run, finishing second in 17:56. Right behind him was Bradley Baker, third with
18:01. What was that? One, two, three? Yes indeed! This was Bradley’s first cross country meet,
Brad was a soccer player for the past couple of fall seasons. Niko Rombes landed sixth place at 18:27, exciting
to see you back in cross country, and thanks for making that top-ten darkly purple. Ethan Warren looked relaxed and
focused as he finished eleventh at 18:48, nice work, Ethan! Junior Noah Kazor had a strong finish at eighteenth in 19:01.
The runner who came in twentieth is a welcome new addition to the team, freshman Tyler Leach. Tyler finished in 19:03,
shaving off a whopping 56 seconds from the time trials, and showing lots of potential for the future. Jon Diep had a
very good run, ending 32nd place in 19:20. Freshman Dean Brigham ran a 19:23, most impressive for his first meet –
welcome to the team, Dean! Junior Colin Egerer has been improving steadily and finished well at 49th in 19:40.
Welcome back to senior John Fonte, who spent nearly all of last season with a stopwatch in hand due to a foot injury.
Good to have you back on the course, John. He completed the run in 20:08, a personal best time on a very tough course.
